2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Year of the Amphibian Adventure.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am certain that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Considering a band of frogs is called an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Frogs are far from new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. However, their popularity has noticeably exploded in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are legitimate amphibian adventures.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To understand this phenomenon, I performed a detailed review into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's elevated place in the public consciousness is partially apparent elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the explosion in gaming seems particularly strong.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Honestly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs offer inherent design advantages for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues enable a host of creative gameplay ideas.
A number of the featured titles directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.
Should these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be on the verge of a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
