Brave Train Staff Member Receives Critical Injuries Amid Multiple Knife Incident on High-Speed Service

A courageous train staff member who intervened to protect travelers during a mass knife attack on a high-speed train has suffered critical injuries, police confirmed on Sunday.

Details of the Terrifying Event

Surveillance footage reportedly shows the employee trying to halt the attacker as the train traveled between a city and Huntingdon in the county. Bystanders described a frightening 14-minute duration after the train left Peterborough, with bloodied victims fleeing through carriages.

The individual, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, remains in detention for interrogation. Authorities declared a significant incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.

Crisis Response and Aftermath

The event on Saturday night resulted in 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unplanned stop at the station in Huntingdon. Several people have now been discharged from hospital.

A witness recorded the suspect brandishing a large knife and being subdued with a stun device as he faced police on the platform. He was reportedly heard shouting, "Kill me, kill me."

“This awful event has created broad consequences. My thoughts and those of everyone in British Transport Police are with those injured and their families – especially the courageous employee of train personnel whose relatives are being assisted by trained personnel,” said a senior law enforcement officer.

Labor Reaction and Calls for Action

Train unions were swift to commend staff and demand increased measures. One union leader stated he would be “requesting immediate meetings with government, rail employers and police to ensure that we have the strongest available assistance, tools and effective protocols in place”.

A different association leader urged the train operator and government “to act quickly to examine security, to help the impacted workers, and to make sure that no incident like this occurs again”.

Operator Praised for Quick Thinking

The train driver who halted the train at Huntingdon was described as being “deeply affected” but “good”, and has been commended by association representatives for doing “precisely what was needed”.

“He didn’t stop the service in the middle of two stops where it’s clearly challenging for the first responders to reach, but he carried on going until he got to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost waiting,” stated a union official.

Additional Information

Police said they received the first distress reports at 7:39 pm, and the train was forced to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

One witness described at first wondering if the event was a holiday joke, but soon realized from people's expressions that it was real.

Authorities have confirmed there is nothing to suggest the event was a terrorist incident and have asked the public to provide with any additional details.

Rail services on the impacted line are expected to have delays until the following day, with travelers recommended to postpone their travel where possible.

Individuals with information that could help the inquiry are encouraged to reach authorities by sending a message a specific number with a case code.
