Disbelief as Government Supporters Acquire the Nation's Top Newspaper

Media professionals at the country's leading publication have voiced surprise after a media group considered aligned with nationalist prime minister Viktor Orbán's party, Fidesz, purchased the tabloid from its previous Swiss owners.

Timing of Purchase

The acquisition, which occurs while Hungary gears up for important elections next year, is generally viewed as another attempt to increase state control on the media.

A Fidesz-friendly media group, Indamedia, stated on Friday it had purchased a collection of Hungarian publications, including Glamour magazine and Blikk, a widely-read daily newspaper whose online platform attracts approximately three million web users monthly.

Leadership Shake-up

Blikk's former top editor, Ivan Zolt Nagy, said on Monday that he and a top executive were departing in "shared decision" with the acquiring company.

They had been hired seven months ago to reposition Blikk, "moving away from sensational stories but on compelling journalism" and to be "more public-oriented, covering political affairs, economic matters, and culture," he commented on social media.

Employee Reactions

Employees of Blikk admitted feeling stunned. "I almost had a cardiac episode when I learned about the announcement," said one correspondent, who requested to remain anonymous. "Personally, this is professionally concerning."

Blikk has introduced a new editor-in-chief, Baláz Kolossváry.

Media Landscape Issues

Numerous reporters who have chosen to remain acknowledge feeling in a challenging situation as there are not many other media organizations available where they could apply.

Throughout the previous 15 years, Orbán has been able to use a sprawling pro-government media landscape to strengthen his public perception and polls.

Election Timing

Whereas major media transactions have usually happened either following voting or during a quiet political period, the buyout of Ringier Hungary occurs less than six months prior to April's general election.

Blikk was considered a prime target for Orbán and his party at a moment when surveys are suggesting that they have a real challenger for the initial occasion in more than a decade.

Political Rival Reaction

The opposition leader, Péter Magyar, whose Respect and Freedom political group is promoting pledges to eradicate deep-seated corruption, has been vocal about Orbán's "media machine" and the harm he claims it has done to Hungary's political freedom.

He has criticised the Ringier Hungary acquisition, stating it represents another move by Orbán to cement his control over Hungary's media outlets.

Newspaper's Significance

While Blikk is a popular newspaper, renowned for its celebrity news and dramatic titles, in the recent years it has also run many pieces on alleged corruption.

"The publication represents by far the most popular daily newspaper in Hungary, a market leader," stated a communications specialist. "The web version has become unexpectedly successful in the past few years, becoming the fourth most popular digital platform in Hungary. If partisan content is published by such widely read and mainstream outlets, it will have an impact on the citizenry."

International Perspective

For over a decade now, Hungary has served as a model for other "illiberal democracies" internationally.

Former American officials and their supporters have long praised Orbán's Hungary even as it plunges in press freedom rankings.

In 2022, Orbán spoke to a meeting of US right-leaning politicians that the way to governance demanded "owning press organizations."

Historical Media Regulation

In 2010, Orbán's regime enacted a regulation that imposed government control over the primary press oversight body and placed the state broadcaster in the hands of allies.

Ownership Information

Indamedia is partially controlled by Mikló Vaszily, a pro-government businessman who is also CEO of a state-aligned TV network.

In a announcement, Indamedia's other co-owner and CEO, Gábor Ziegler, said: "Through the acquisition of Ringier Hungary, the company is gaining a profitable publication group of equivalent magnitude to Indamedia, with strong market positions and popular products that have significant influence in the Hungarian communications sector."

Ringier stated in a release that its decision to sell was "motivated entirely by strategic economic considerations and our emphasis on our main internet businesses in Hungary."
