Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these medications should be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.

This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
