Major Online Disruption Affects Dozens Sites and Applications

An extensive internet outage has impacted numerous online platforms and apps around the world, with users noting problems accessing the internet due to difficulties at the online infrastructure platform.

The disrupted services encompass Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with several Amazon-managed operations such as its primary shopping website and the Ring doorbell home security firm.

Throughout Britain, the financial institution Lloyds was impacted in addition to its subsidiaries the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were further notifications of issues accessing the HM Revenue and Customs website on Monday morning. Furthermore across the UK, several Ring customers used online platforms to report their home gadgets were failing.

Solely in the United Kingdom, notifications of disruptions on specific platforms totaled the thousands for every service.

Officials confirmed that the issue originated in the east coast of the US at AWS, a unit that offers essential online infrastructure for a host of businesses, who utilize space on AWS infrastructure. Amazon Web Services is the most extensive web hosting system.

Just after late night (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), the company announced “higher problem frequencies and latencies” for AWS services in a zone on the eastern US of the United States. The cascading impact was seen to disrupt services worldwide, with the outage tracking website showing problems with the identical platforms in multiple continents.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a platform that reports on internet outages, also reported a surge in outages on that morning, and numerous instances situated in the Virginia area, the location of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where AWS said the issues started.
