Dedicated viewers of the series finally received a long-awaited backstory in the second season's fourth episode, called “It's a Deal.” This installment is likely to prompt extensive conversation and pose numerous questions about the essence of a certain demonic Overlord who appears far more powerful than anyone previously understood. These fresh disclosures feature a look into the mortal existence of a fan-favorite character before his death and condemnation to Hell.
A Significant Hint for Upcoming Installments
The show's creator disclosed an inside detail about the episode – it serves as a huge hint for the third season. Additionally, she offered further details into the process of creating the human versions of her demonic animated characters.
Warning: Spoilers for episode 4 of Hazbin Hotel, the show's second season.
In the episode, a flashback reveals that fan-favorite character Alastor the Radio Demon was a mass murderer in his human life. Being aware he was destined for Hell, he established communication with the realm beyond beforehand to secure a powerful role in Hell. Rosie, who leads the cannibal faction in Hell, vowed Alastor he would become “the most powerful Condemned Soul in Hell” in exchange for his soul.
This raises an important query: How is Rosie sufficiently strong to raise Alastor over every other Sinner Demons?
“The agreement between Rosie and Alastor is the first stepping stone in a much bigger story that involves a great deal, moving into season 3,” the showrunner explains. “Obviously that is an excellent question: How is she so strong? The answer could be various factors, but the revelation is in season three. I'm very excited for people to see it.”
There’s no telling how long the audience will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The production companies have approved seasons 3 and 4, but the showrunner often remarks that animated production is a time-consuming endeavor, and later seasons have no release dates yet. Still, she states holding off on those details is a crucial aspect of keeping season 2’s attention in the right places.
“The difficulty of any agreement with demons, or stories that have enigmas, is giving people sufficient clues to be like, Something's up here, and then revealing that gradually, and letting that be satisfying,” she says. “So I am quite eager.”
Questions Answered in The Next Season
The creator promises that the upcoming season will tackle the questions followers have been posing, such as why the cannibal leader commanded Alastor to vanish for a seven-year period, which diminished his influence in Hell.
“The whole seven years, and the deals these humans are doing, and all that — it's feeding into a larger story,” she reveals.
In the meantime, the origin story episode provides another glimpse into what the main characters of Sinner Demons appeared as as humans, the second after viewing Sir Pentious’ historical mortal appearance in the second episode. She says that significant consideration was put into the visual creation of these forms.
“The mortal forms of these personas hold so much weight,” she notes. “They range from looking really different from their demon form to looking almost identical. With the first character, the first one we see, there was some internal discussion internally between choosing a design that symbolizes the personality, versus going with something that's historically correct. We leaned toward making something that just seemed like it was him.”
She says the biggest debate over the mortal look of Pentious was his long hair: “We were like, ‘No one typically had extended hair like that in Victorian-era London.’ But simultaneously, we think the outline is so important, and we also just thought he looked good. We were like, ‘This seems correct.’ We sort of gave the excuse that he lived in seclusion, so he just allowed his hair to lengthen. So there's always a way. As we create the mortal forms of these personas […] it's such a fun thing to investigate and figure out. I'm excited for people to view additional of the appearances of the human versions.”
