United Kingdom Expands Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Advisory List with Eleven Destinations
British Foreign Office has placed eleven further nations to its public alert roster about the threats of toxic alcohol poisoning from contaminated spirits.
This updated warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "a worldwide rise in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol contamination.
Just a few weeks ago, the government had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, following multiple serious events such as the fatal death of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being warned that even small amounts of methanol can cause blindness or fatality within 12–48 hours.

Toxic alcohol is a toxic chemical often employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint solvent. This substance is not meant for human consumption.
Although it is inherently formed during the production of spirits, licensed producers reduce it to minimal, harmless amounts for ingestion through the distillation process.

"When you are drinking spirits abroad, choose well-known venues and steer clear of homemade alcohol or free shots," the official said.
